Keeping Your Energy Bill Low While Selling Your Home

By Jynette DeMarco

If possible, you should try to keep your energy bill low while selling your home. Not only will it save you money and be good for the environment, it will also be appealing to potential buyers.

There are a few easy steps you can take to keep your energy bill low.

  • Lower your heat or air conditioning. Climate control is one of the easiest ways to increase your bill because it requires a lot of energy. Turn off or at least lower your heating or air conditioning, especially if nobody is currently living in the house.
  • Turn heat or AC back to their normal levels only when a potential buyer is touring the house so that they are comfortable and know that the systems function properly.
  • Fixtures such as fountains are a nice touch to a house and would be good for the buyer to see functioning. However, keeping them on full time can be costly. Try to turn them on when someone is looking at your house.
  • Unplug appliances. Appliances that are plugged into your wall may be using more energy than you think and so it is important to unplug these items and not just turn them off on the wall switch. Even removing small ones, like toasters, can help reduce your electricity bill.
  • Removing these items will also clean up your kitchen area and make it look more appealing to the buyer. A nicer and neater house without excess cords and small appliances will help the buyer picture their own items in the house.
