Why Should You Hire a Moving Company? An Interview with Andrea Manseau of College Bound Movers

By Andrea Manseau

When it comes to moving, many people believe they can enlist their friends' help and get it done themselves, but sometimes that just adds unnecessary stress to the already difficult process. That's why we interviewed Andrea Manseau of College Bound Movers to learn more about the benefits of hiring a moving company.

About College Bound Movers:

College Bound Movers is a full-service moving company that was founded in 1991 by Edward Smith. Smith started the company to help pay his college tuition, but the company grew year over year and became more than just a means for a college education, it became a well-known moving company that serves New Hampshire, New England, and beyond.

Advantages to Hiring a Moving Company?

There are a number of advantages of hiring a moving company over somebody moving themselves.

First, they only have to make one phone call. When someone chooses to move themselves, he or she is responsible for finding a moving truck, finding friends/family members who can help, or finding moving and packing supplies. With a moving company, that one call will cover booking the moving truck, the movers, and help you get all of the moving supplies you need, taking some of the stress out of all of the details.

Second, moving companies offer experience. Professional movers have a lot of experience packing furniture and belongings in the truck in the safest way to protect a customer's items. They also know how to deal with "surprise" circumstances, such as needing storage for an extra night because a closing was moved, needing to move at the last minute, a turn in a stair case that is tight, or a non-traditional item that needs extra attention.

Third, a moving company also serves as a resource throughout the customer's moving process. If the customer has questions about how to best pack, a representative from the moving company he/she booked will be able to give advice. With years of experience performing moves of every size and shape, a moving company can better navigate the challenges than a person or family that rarely moves.

Also, a company that has relationships with apartment or condo complexes may have special clearance to park their moving trucks somewhere that a do-it-yourself mover may not.

Is Hiring a Moving Company Actually More Affordable?

When a person factors in all of the time they took to organize his/her move, including the time they took to organize his/her move, the cost of a rental truck-including miles driven, the time it took to actually move, the "Thank you" to their friends/family for pitching in (drinks and pizza are the "go to!"), and the cost of packing supplies, hiring a moving company to do the heavy lifting turns out to be the better of the two options. What some people choose to do is move the smaller items, boxes or small furniture, and use a moving company for the "big stuff", like couches, tables, large wooden furniture, and the like.

Are Moving Companies Required to Have Insurance?

By federal law, every moving company has to cover items up to $0.60 per pound. This means that if a wooden hutch weighs 100 pounds, if it was damaged, the moving company would have to pay the customer $60.00. Many moving companies, like College Bound Movers, offer additional coverage options to provide further protection of their belongings. The industry average for damages, according to the American Moving and Storage Association, is between 18 and 20 percent, while College Bound Movers has an annual damage rate of less than three percent.

Advice When it Comes to Hiring a Moving Company?

Moving is incredibly stressful. In fact, moving was found to be the third most stressful life event, behind divorce and death. When a homeowner is trying to do everything his or herself, that stress only compounds. By placing the responsibility of the actual move on a moving company, the homeowner can focus on packing, on preparing the house to transfer to the new owner, on making sure the kids are well-adjusted and ready to move, talking to the kids' schools to get the appropriate transfer paperwork (if needed), preparing the pets and getting their paperwork for a new vet, and all of those necessary things that have to happen before a move. Also, it's important to choose the right moving company. Call at least three companies and get estimates. Ask questions about what's included in those estimates, and if one company mentions something the others didn't, call those companies back so you're comparing apples to apples. Price shouldn't always be the deciding factor either. If your friends are recommending a moving company and that company looks like it has a great reputation but costs a little bit more than another company, trust the recommendation.
