Visit 1785: Colonial-Style Bed and Breakfast Offers White Mountain Experience

By Kelly Church

Having earned the title "Best View from an Inn" from the Yankee Magazine editors, The 1785 Inn is a Conway, NH bed and breakfast lying in the White Mountains. The traditional white building with blue shutters is surrounded by flowers during the spring and covered in blankets of snow during the winter.

Inspired by the area, Innkeepers Charlie and Becky Mallar say the bed and breakfast is decorated with welcoming country décor. The property provides close access to tourist destinations, like the North Conway moose safaris, and plenty of outdoor recreational activities.

"[We would describe our décor as] comfortable country décor with beautiful individually decorated rooms in an historical building with original, hand-hewn beams and fireplaces," the Mallars say. "We offer 17 guest rooms for [the] bed and breakfast, two guest living rooms with wood-burning fireplaces, two dining rooms with mountain views and wood-burning fireplaces, [a] comfortable pub and an amazing property with breathtaking views."

Guest rooms at The 1785 Inn vary. Most rooms are considered standard with private bathrooms, start at $99 per night and are available with a double bed, queen bed, or with a queen bed and a twin bed. However, other standard rooms feature a shared bathroom for a lower cost alternative, starting at $79 per night. Larger private rooms are an option, too. These rooms start at $129 per night and are alongside the back of the building, offering exceptional mountain views. These come available with a queen bed, king bed, or two double beds.

The condo suite stay is the most luxurious available at The 1785 Inn. With the largest rooms and located at the back of the inn, they are the closest to the pool and ski trails. The condos feature a king bed, two double-sized futons, complete kitchen, dining room, living room, television and a deck overlooking the White Mountains. Per night, the condos start at $149. However, these are also available with breakfast included, starting at $159 per night.

According to the Mallars, amenities at the bed and breakfast include: affordable rates, a famous mountain view, a historic colonial building, great country breakfasts, free Wi-Fi, herb and vegetable gardens, an outdoor swimming pool and river access. Nearby is Attitash, a mountain resort where guests can ski and snowboard.

Wildcat is another option for mountain snow activities. For those who want to cross-country ski and snowshoe, Mt. Washington Valley is easy to set up through The 1785 Inn. Guests can also sign up for Bike The Whites, an inn-to-inn bike tour exploring the White Mountains.

Family-friendly activities include North Conway's Moose Safari tour. The 2016 year marked the company's tenth anniversary giving moose tours around the area. On this bus tour, guests will get the opportunity to view moose in their natural habitat. The Conway Scenic Railroad is another option, taking guests on an 11-mile trek through Conway Valley in just under an hour.

Reservations at The 1785 Inn can be made online or by calling. Midweek prices are the lowest for scheduling and most expensive during the fall season. Rates each night are for two people, but can be discounted if a single person is staying, or up-charged if there are more guests per room.
