The YOGASMITH Helps Every Student Find Their Inner Yogi

By Kelly Church

New Hampshire based-studio, YOGASMITH, offers yoga classes for people in the Portsmouth, Exeter and Dover communities. The studios put an emphasis on dynamic movement paired with proper breath and cater to members of all levels. According to co-owner Laurie Parlin Smith, yoga can help with a variety of both physical and mental issues, including stress levels, self-confidence and balance.

"People begin yoga for their own personal reasons and a quality yoga practice has the ability to assist them in making the changes they desire," Parlin Smith said. "I would love to share that yoga is for everyone."

YOGASMITH has beginner, intermediate and advanced classes for students at any point in their yoga practice. There's even an all levels class where students can practice with their peers that may be at a different point than them. Smith said she recommends that new students take a few classes from different instructors at the studio to find exactly what they like in a yoga class.

"At YOGASMITH, all of our teachers have their own style and we encourage new members to arrive to class open to the experience that the teacher brings to the mat," Parlin Smith said. "You may find you love an intense workout that makes your body feel strong, confident and exhausted, or you may be surprised by the restorative powers of a more gentle yoga practice that allows you to focus on your breath and body in a very different way."

Smith said it's amazing the results a student can attain from practicing yoga even once a week. The benefits are both physical and mental, and Smith knows first hand, having adopted yoga herself as a 20-year-old woman experiencing consistent stressors in her daily life. She started taking classes, transitioned into teacher training and started instructing her own classes.

The studios were formed in 2008 with a focus around accessibility so that students could easily incorporate yoga into their daily life. That is, the co-owners wanted the studios in convenient locations, with warm welcoming environments and affordable prices. An unlimited monthly membership is only $29 a month (for new members). The drop-in rate for a single class is $15. Classes are available seven days a week at all three studios.
