Jewett Farms + Co. Story of a Cabinetmaker.

By Olivia Lord

Please tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Jewett Farms + Co. Is dedicated to craftsmanship and passionate about quality. We design and build custom cabinetry, we fabricate and install soapstone and we source and sell reclaimed and new hardwood flooring.

JF was formed in 1999 by Matthew Lord and Mike Myers. The two began in a small woodshop in York, ME with the goal of creating a cabinet shop that combined traditional woodworking with innovative design. Over the years the company has grown to a thriving small business with over 20 employees and expanded to include both soapstone and hardwood flooring.

Our soapstone shop, cabinet shop and main office is now based in Dover NH, we moved into our new 2000+ sf shop in 2011, after outgrowing our space in York. After 6 years in Newburyport, MA we closed our showroom in anticipation of moving into Boston. We will be opening our Boston Design Center showroom in June 2015

Do you offer design services?

We do ? most of our kitchens are custom designed by our team. Most New England homes have unique details that mass produced cabinet boxes rarely fit. We work to enhance the history and beauty of older homes, and compliment the urban characteristics of contemporary architecture. We combine classic style with intelligent modern touches. Most importantly we design to fit the style of the home and homeowner.

What materials do you typically work with?

We believe that materials matter! There are many beautiful hardwoods available, the choices can be overwhelming to homeowners. We have been through this and know how to manage all those options. Our preference is to work with sustainably harvested woods that are milled regionally. Once a client has chosen their species we hand select the materials that will be used for each project.

What kind of finish do you use?

We are committed to creating a healthy workplace and delivering clean cabinetry. That is why we work with water based urethane finishes, these are healthy for our team and leave no off gassing for our clients. We do both sprayed and hand painted finishes as well as natural wood finishes. We develop custom glazes and use oils to create the exact look our homeowners want.

What kinds of kitchen trends are you seeing?

The biggest trend we are seeing at the moment is the need for functional storage solutions that fit seamlessly into the design of the kitchen. For instance drawers instead of cabinet shelving so that nothing is lost in the back of the cabinet. We are seeing people move away from shiny granite towards the more matte look of soapstone, they also love its functionality. Tones of grey and black seem to be rising in popularity, as well as contrasting perimeter cabinetry color with islands. We are also seeing a solid interest in reclaimed timbers, not just for flooring (which we offer) but also for furniture pieces and cabinetry.

Any words of wisdom for homeowners embarking on a kitchen renovation?

Take your time and choose your team wisely. The early phases of design and the most critical times. Make the key decisions early and make sure your team is communicating well. If you are diligent in the beginning there is less room error, and avoidable mistakes can be bypassed entirely. Choose a kitchen designer and cabinetmaker who are experienced and can guide you through the maze of choices. Choose quality materials and a classic design that will stand the test of time.
