The Christmas Loft, Where Christmas Magic is in the Air Year Round

By Elisha Neubauer

Christmas is a magical time of year. Everyone seems to get into the holly and jolly of decorating for the season, which is exactly what brought The Christmas Loft to life.

The Vander Veers were your typical American Dream seekers, looking to make their own little piece of entrepreneurial heaven in the high times of the American economy. But what they didn't expect on their journey was finding their own little slice of magic in the process.

In 1975, Richard and Ronnie Vander Veer moved to the northern Vermont area with the sheer intent of launching their very own country store. Which they did, quite successfully. During their time running this quaint country shop, they decided to take a passion of their very own and celebrate it in the unused loft space located above the store. Their passion? Christmas.

The Christmas Loft, as it was nicknamed, became a larger pull to the country shop than the family could have ever imagined. What was just a family adoration became a full blown sensation and, in 1986, the family sold the country store to focus solely on the concept of The Christmas Loft. Today, there are two stores bearing The Christmas Loft name in the New England area; one in North Conway and the other in North Woodstock.

What was the cause for the success? Stephen O'Farrell, Co-Owner of the unique shops, claims it has to do with the parents of his partner and other part owner, Greg Greg Vander Veer. "It was their deep love and enjoyment for all things Christmas -- its special traditions and the magical feelings that it evokes. This made them want to grow the company into the larger attraction that exists today," he affirms.

But guests may tell you a different story.

For those who have set foot in one of The Christmas Loft shops will tell you it is more than just a is an entire experience. One filled with magic, wonder, and excitement which only the Christmas season can bring forth. The flagship store, for example, is crafted from a life-size 19th Century New England village depicting a traditional Christmas Eve for the time period. The entire full-scale display is fully animated and an absolute wonder to those who experience it.

"We believe that Christmas should be fun, and we have designed our stores to delight children and adults alike," explains O'Farrell. "From the moment they walk in the door and are greeted by Bessie the singing cow and all her animated friends, our customers are transported into a beautifully decorated winter wonderland full of special product and endless Christmas spirit."
