Teaching and Practicing Self Healing through Ayurveda at Amala Wellness

By Marina Jokic

Amala Wellness teaches people how to lead a healthful life. The center has a plentiful menu of services including Ayurvedic consultations, detoxification therapies, nutrition, yoga, massage, bodywork, infrared sauna and energy work among others. Owner and Ayurvedic practitioner Susan Morgan says that Amala gives the impression of a spa, but that it is rooted in nurturing long-lasting health and wellbeing.

Located in Goffstown, NH and Andover, MA a lot of the practices at Amala Wellness are grounded in the Ayurvedic tradition, which is an Indian medical science that focuses on healing and maintaining the body by addressing the root causes of misalignment and disease. The two main guiding principles of Ayurveda are the interconnectedness of mind and body and the ability of the mind to rejuvenate the body. Hence, health starts with achieving a mental balance, which is a foundation for a healthy body. During meditation, for example, the heart rate and breathing slow down and the body decreases the production of "stress" hormones while increasing the production of neurotransmitters that enhance wellbeing.

Morgan is a long-time practitioner of Ayurveda, and is thrilled at the increasing popularity it has been enjoying in western countries. Becoming the new buzz word in spas and salons across the country, Ayurveda, meaning the science of life, zeroes in on the underlying causes of disease instead of treating the symptoms as some conventional medical methods tend to do. Through a more complete Ayurvedic system of body and mind work, Morgan points out, a person can really restore him or herself from the inside out.

Through an initial consultation with a certified practitioner, you will undergo an in-depth examination to determine any imbalances. "Together, we come up with a very doable plan that will keep you balanced and healthy," reassures Morgan. After your meeting, you receive a detailed recommendation packet that addresses nutritional needs, physical activity, and other pertinent treatments.

Among the plethora of massage services offered are deep tissue, therapeutic, Swedish, pre-natal, relaxation and hot stone. Polarity therapy is the art and science of stimulating and balancing the flow of energy in the body, which is the fundament of health. There is also Yogassage, a form of bodywork that combines Western and Eastern massage techniques based combined with stretches and other movement techniques can bring about positive changes within the body.

For those searching for an even deeper cleanse, Amala offers detoxification therapies which emphasize strong digestion, sound sleep, and healthy regularity. "Allowing toxins to accumulate interrupts this process and ultimately manifests into disease," says Morgan. Diet and lifestyle are the other major factors in determining health. "Learning how to bring peace and calmness into our everyday and eating clean seasonal foods allows our bodies to breakdown and assimilate the nutrients from our food, strengthen our digestion and elimination process and our natural ability to heal," adds Morgan.
