Take a Ride Through Hog Heaven, New Hampshire Style

By Joshua Nothom

Every June, the usually quiet and serene shores of Lake Winnisquam and Lake Winnipesaukee electrify with the deep, thunderous rumble of thousands of motorcycles. From hill climbs to bike rides, from live music to authentic and delicious New England grub, when motorcycle week rolls into Laconia, NH it's sure to be a treat for anyone wishing to indulge in gears, grease, and gaiety. Since this event runs during the week of Father's Day, it's perfect for your hog-loving husband and dyna-glide devoted dad.

Laconia Motorcycle Week roots can be found 92 years ago when a few hundred bikers decided to cruise through town to enjoy its natural majesty. This nationally sanctioned event has been going strong ever since and brought an exciting one-of-a-kind summer kick-off to central New Hampshire. Some 200,000 to 350,000 visitors are expected each year and this event rivals similar gatherings in Sturgis and Daytona.

There is a long and interesting history to be discovered in Laconia. From reports of riots between biker gangs and the police in the 60's when Laconia almost lost motorcycle week, to the heartfelt stories of economic salvation that bikers brought to this small New England town during the recession of the 2000's, this town has a storied past. Any long time local would love to share the town lore over a cold beverage at Tower Hill Tavern or a hot coffee at the Free Coffee House and tell it like it is.

The event starts off strong. The first Saturday will see a police escorted motorcycle ride around Lake Winnipesaukee. The ride starts early with a breakfast buffet and ends in the afternoon with a pig roast and live music to groove to until evening. It's a charitable ride, but even if you don't ride, be sure to stop by, support the cause, and enjoy a motorcycle cavalcade the likes of which you won't see anywhere else. This is only but one event on an extremely action-packed day. The first Saturday alone provides visitors the opportunity to see stunt shows, bike builds, paint-offs, countless parties, breakfasts, and lunches- and even a bikini bike wash, weather permitting of course.

The rest of the week is followed up by much more excitement. Antique bike shows, vendor displays, and even more music take place during the rest of the week. There is a pool tournament, faith ministries, police museum tours, and even a fireworks show during the week. The week winds up on Father's Day this year hosting a motorcycle race, an air stunt show, and a vintage motorcycle tour. This annual celebration is filled with action and sure to please the most hardcore gear-head and weekend tourist alike.

This event wraps up two universal loves for many Americans- their dads and their hogs. Laconia Motorcycle week is the original week-long motorcycle event in the American Northeast. Laconia is easily found off Interstate 93, roughly an hour north of Manchester (which hosts a regional airport for anyone traveling long distance). Or you can just follow the sound of that low thunderous rumble and it will lead you right to Motorcycle Week.
