Sugar Coated Bakery: Dracut's Confectionary Gem

By Marina Jokic

Sugar Coated Bakery is a confectionary lover's dream. Whatever occasion has brought you through the bakery's doors, you will be certain to find your perfect cake or pastry. Weddings, bachelorette parties, graduations, and baby showers are just some of the events that owner and cake artist Jennifer Gryckiewicz has been catering to.

"Whether you are looking for a simple floral design or an over-the-top elaborate fondant cake, Sugar Coated Bakery has the experience and skill to make any occasion special," Gryckiewicz said. "There is just something so special about a baked good made from scratch, by hand [and] we put our love of baking into everything we do."

Two of the signature qualities that set this bakery apart from the rest is their original, homemade Italian buttercream and their grandiose cakes. All of the cakes consist of at least four spongy, moist layers wrapped in three layers of the most delicious Italian buttercream. From simple streamer cakes to giant six-foot tall Christmas tree cake, Sugar Coated Bakery can take on any project.

"We love working with local, seasonal flavors and that's something I think you can only get from a local bakery," Gryckiewicz said. "We bake fresh every day and are always changing out our flavors, so it's a new experience every time you stop in."

All thirty cake flavors are available in the form of cupcakes. From classic contenders such as lemon, vanilla, and chocolate to rarer ones like passion fruit, white chocolate spice, almond, coconut, and checkerboard cake, Sugar Coated Bakery can accommodate most requests if they are sent at least a few weeks in advance.

Cakes aren't the only favorite dessert at parties. Pies, cupcakes, brownies, and cookies fly off the bakery's shelves too, and can also be pre-ordered in larger quantities depending on the event. A variety of pie flavors can be prepared such as cherry, banana cream, lemon meringue and Dutch apple pie, to name a few.

"The thing I enjoy most about my job is the fun and creativity it brings; every day is something different," Gryckiewicz said. "Our customers are more than [just clients to us]; we are friends, we chat, we laugh, we have fun, and I love seeing their faces when they pick up their cake, there really is nothing better."

You can coat a dish with shortening and after that put two or three tablespoons of sugar in, and simply tilt the container around until there's sugar adhered to the majority of the shortenings.
