Secondwind Water Systems Keeps the Granite State's Water Flowing Cleanly

By Pamela Sosnowski

Access to clean and safe water in our homes and public buildings is something that most of us take for granted until we don't have it. Since 1989, Secondwind Water Systems has ensured that water runs cleanly for homes, businesses, and public suppliers throughout the Granite State.

"We are the region's water quality specialists, with extensive expertise in treating the toughest and most common water problems," Christine P. Fletcher, the company's president, owner, and co-founder, said. "We custom design systems to treat for health issues, staining, odor, hardness and so much more. Twenty-five years after opening our doors for business, we now serve over 10,000 residential and commercial customers, manage 130 small public water supplies and work with engineers and the state of New Hampshire on gasoline contamination sites."

Fletcher's husband, Crispin Fletcher, was inspired to launch the company after the tragic Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989. An avid sailor that was saddened by the contaminated ocean water, he decided to create a company that would make an environmental difference and help clean up water in the New Hampshire area. Secondwind has grown from a three-employee operation to employing a staff of 35 experienced individuals. Many of the employees have been with the company for at least a decade.

Secondwind works with homeowners to resolve issues such as hard water, staining, bad tasting water, odd smelling water, and more. Because New Hampshire water tends to harbor arsenic, uranium, radon, bacteria and other contaminants, every new client meeting consists of one of the company's certified water specialists testing the water to determine solutions. These may include the installation of a water softening system, a drinking water filtration system, or specialty filters that can eliminate chlorine, hydrogen sulfide, and more. The company works with each client, tailoring solutions based on their budget and needs.

Some of the businesses that Secondwind works with include those that serve the public and rely on clean water to keep their customers satisfied, such as restaurants, hotels, wineries, and breweries. They also serve schools, hospitals, and healthcare facilities.

Commercial and business clients include Dartmouth, the Olive Garden, and LaBelle Winery. These types of customers usually require large-scale water treatment and filtration systems, and Secondwind can monitor the mechanical and chemical operation of the products to ensure they're working properly.

"The water chemistry in each home or business is different," Fletcher said. "This is why one-size-fits-all filters simply don't work to the level that most families or businesses would feel safe or comfortable. Our Water Quality Association certified water specialists test the water, and then work with our customer to design a system that solves the problem and fits the budget."

Secondwind also enjoys a close relationship with the local community; besides volunteering at non-profits and sponsoring local events, employees often teach classes to realtors and homebuilders through the NH Water Works Association. They've also donated water filtration systems to Peace and Paws Dog Rescue, ensuring clean drinking water to pooches, staff, and volunteers.

The company is based in Manchester and anyone can request a free water test through their website, here.
