New England Comfort at Lamie's Inn

By S. Mathur

Lamie's Inn is a Hampton institution. The historic building dates back to 1740 and is located in one of the most beautiful sections of the New England coastline. The family-owned and -run Inn prides on authentically restored colonial style guest rooms that preserve the charm of the building, and the in-house Old Salt Restaurant offers solid local food and drink.

Mike Higgins, who is co-owner of the Inn with his wife Lisabeth, says, "My favorite part of running Lamie's Inn is providing hospitality. I love to make people feel welcomed and at home. As our innkeeper, Maureen, says, it's wonderful to see our guests arrive from their busy lives into the peaceful atmosphere of our lobby, spend a night or several days with us and leave feeling relaxed and refreshed."

The business is a family legacy, adds Higgins, "... that my mother, Nancy Higgins, started when she founded The Old Salt Eating & Drinking Place on Hampton Beach. Working alongside her, my family was proud to build a reputation for generous portions of fresh dishes and an atmosphere where our customers felt at home. Nancy considered the entire crew and all our guests family. Our mission at The Old Salt Restaurant at Lamie's Inn is to continue providing the same friendly, welcoming service our mother was so proud of."

The Inn has been a historic stop on the Old Boston Post Road and a campaign stop for presidential elections. Located within easy driving distance of Boston, Maine, the lakes region and the skiing mountains, Hampton and the Inn are a good base from which to explore this part of New England. Each season is a good time to visit the New Hampshire seacoast: from summer on the ocean to autumn foliage to winter skiing and a New England Christmas, there's an abundance of things to see and do.

At the Inn, special events celebrate the seasons and holidays. The Sunday Brunch is a favorite with locals and visitors alike, and features artfully arranged displays of fresh foods, live piano music and a 36 inch tall chocolate fountain. There are comedy nights and dinner theatre events throughout the year, and the Inn is an essential part of local events like the Hampton Christmas Parade, the Hampton Beach Seafood Festival, and the Rockfest Half Marathon.

The Tavern has live music from local artists every weekend, sporting events on large screen TVs, and 23 beers on tap - many from local breweries. Popular weekly events are trivia night, martini night, and oyster night. The Old Salt Clam Chowder is justly famous as well.

And perhaps the best thing, certainly for those traveling with their furry friends, is that Lamie's Inn is pet-friendly.
