Firefly American Bistro and Bar Serves up a Modern Approach to Classic Cuisine

By Allison Wilson

Firefly American Bistro and Bar is a leading contemporary dining establishment in the heart of New Hampshire's Queen City. Serving classic American fare with a modern twist, its upscale yet casual atmosphere offers an environment where diners can enjoy a romantic night out, after work drinks with friends, relaxing Sunday brunch, or host a special event for groups of up to 35 guests.

Manchester's Firefly American Bistro and Bar began as the dream of brother and sister team David Becker and Diane Downing, both New Hampshire natives. Opened in the winter of 2008, Firefly was constructed in the ground floor of an antique building that has retained the character of Manchester's days as an industrial hub of the northeast. Diane, General Manager, and David, Executive Chef, have brought decades of culinary and hospitality experience together and cultivated a leading contemporary restaurant and bar in the heart of New Hampshire's Queen City.

"The food served at Firefly is classic American fare with a modern twist," says Rachael Jones, Manager of Firefly American Bistro and Bar. "We offer comfort food favorites that are prepared in a traditional way and artistic dishes showcasing adventurous, fresh ingredients."

Firefly's upscale casual atmosphere offers an environment where diners can enjoy a romantic night out, after work drinks with friends, relaxing Sunday brunch, or host a special event for groups of up to 35 guests. The casual yet elegant dining room is filled with high-backed booths, cozy banquettes and ambient lighting to add to the comfortable theme. The restaurant also offers seasonal outdoor dining on the covered patio. The modestly upscale ambiance goes hand-in-hand with the menu's classic contemporary food and drink menus.

"Our most popular dish since the day we opened our doors on the day after Christmas 2008 has been our go-go bread, an appetizer that is perfect for sharing," Jones says. "Go-go bread is warm gorgonzola fondue served with roasted garlic toast- and it is addicting!" (pictured above)

Other popular dishes on the menu include the braised lamb shank, cooked for hours with assorted vegetables and red wine until its fall-off-the-bone tender, served over parmesan risotto, as well the pan-seared sea scallops with applewood smoked bacon, wilted spinach and roasted garlic cream, served over jasmine rice. The extensive craft cocktail menu features many fresh, house-made ingredients, an intriguing yet accessible wine list offering more than 50 wines by the glass and bottle and a carefully curated beer list focusing on many local brews. On Sundays, Firefly serves brunch from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and offers a build-your-own bloody mary bar complete with dozens of hot sauces, pickles, chili peppers, roasted garlic, beef jerky, shrimp and more.

Firefly is open seven days a week, serving lunch and dinner, with the exception of Sunday when brunch and dinner are served. The owners' constant dedication and hands-on practices have helped to secure Firefly's glowing reputation as a destination for discerning brunch, lunch, and dinner diners in the Southern New Hampshire area.
