Interior Design and Bringing Out Your Personal Style: An Interview with Steve Puopolo of DB Interiors

By Steve Puopolo

Tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

DB interiors is an Interior Design Services Company owned by Donna Boerner, CID and includes myself as Design Consultant & Project Manager. We are dedicated to a very honest and personal approach of designing and provide a variety of services including: Design & Color Consultations, Kitchen & Bath Design, Space Planning, Lighting Plans, Furniture Selection and Window Treatments for both Residential and Small Commercial Clients.

What are some important things for people to consider before they start a home design or remodeling project?

It's best to know what you want to accomplish and to be realistic about the actual cost and the time it will take to complete the project. Most people don't know what to expect or understand the process. This is one of the best reasons to work with a designer early on. You will get a professional assessment of the scope of your project and that leads to a great design and a solid plan of action. This not only affects your budget, but also will ensure that you get what you want and will help you to save time and avoid disappointment.

Can you briefly explain how to help your clients discover their own personal style?

Truthfully, looking through your favorite magazines or scanning images on the internet is a great way for discovery. We tend to gravitate to what we really like. We encourage our clients to compile as many images as they can and to use Pinterest which is a great tool for this. Then with the help of a designers trained eye, we can quickly assess the client's taste and assist them in making good choices. This comes from years of experience. Experience that will help you save a lot of time and maximize the potential of the space.

What advice do you have to help someone who knows what they like when they see it but doesn't feel like they can recreate it in their own home?

This is really more about Inspiration. Take that photo of what looks good to you and think of words that you would use to describe it. Like: Warm, Cozy, Classy or Comfortable. You don't have to purchase the exact same things in the picture for your home , you just need to recreate the feeling. Sometimes it's really the accessories, like the pillows or that rustic table, that have really grabbed your attention.

What is one of the biggest challenges that homeowners face when it comes to interior design and how do you help them solve this?

For most people, the biggest obstacle with interior design or remodeling is visualizing the finished outcome. Through floor plans, renderings and project boards, we can help our clients see what the finished project will actually look like. This way everything is designed and decided upon before we even get started
