Important Home Features to Look For: An Interview with Niles Erickson of Erickson Construction Co., Inc.

By Niles Erickson

Tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

In 1979, Matt Erickson went into business and since then has been joined by his three sons. Erickson Construction Co., Inc. has been building new homes and providing home improvement services as a general contractor in the greater Nashua area for over 35 years, specializing in home additions, renovations and remodeling. We offer free, timely estimates and in-home consultations.

Can you briefly talk about the role that the surrounding community plays in a new home?

The surrounding community plays a large role when it comes to new homes. The look, upkeep and curb side appeal of homes all make an impact on the community of which they are located in, either positive or negative. When potential home buyers enter a community or neighborhood, their first impression will perhaps be of their surroundings and not the home itself.

What are some of the most popular home features that people are looking for?

Two of the more common features people are looking for when buying homes are upgraded kitchen spaces and master bedroom suites. A new kitchen in a home makes a positive impact, as the kitchen is often times the centerpiece of the home. Home buyers will also be drawn in by master bedroom suites. Other popular home features include upgraded entrance ways and front doors, as well as a growing demand for an ideal office space within the home.

How would you compare the features in an adult home community with those in a "standard" house?

Some common home features found within adult communities include modifications that facilitate a person's ability to get around their home and interact with their environment. Many of these modifications can be adapted in a "standard" home as well. Aging in place is a common concept these days and changes do not have to be major renovations.

Installing wider doorways now, allows for possible wheelchair access in the future. The simple addition of placing blocks within the framed walls makes it possible to add grab bars at a later date. The goal is to create proper modifications that allow people to remain in their homes safely with the proper assistance in place, enabling people to continue to live independently.

What tips can you give to people who are new to the area and ready to buy a home?

Contact a reputable contractor or home inspector to perform an inspection of the home to avoid any surprises, for example, foundation problems, ant or termite damage, wet rot, mold, etc. As mentioned about the role of the surrounding community, take a look through the neighborhood to get a better idea of the area. Also, think about what is most important for you; what is the thru traffic like? How far to the nearest market? Questions such as these will play a role in any home buyer's decision.
