Hampton's Dream Photographer Captures Women's Beauty Effortlessly

By Kelly Church

For Jen Dean, capturing the precious moments between people is what inspired her business. The Portland, ME photographer is the owner of her own photography company, Jen Dean Photography, and considers herself mostly a portrait photographer. Dean proclaims there are very few photos of her as a kid. She was always the girl behind the camera, showing other people how beautiful they can be in front of it. Now, she gives many of her clients a fairytale experience.

"I am traditional in some respects, but do a lot of work that is also storybook or fairytale like," Dean says. "I love the idea of playing with imagination in an image. I don't like work that involves hours of Photoshop, so I try and do most of my work on set and in the camera."

Dean's photos are whimsical, often with dreamy wardrobes and muted tones. She refers to these sessions as Dream Sessions, and says they are mostly geared towards young children and kids in their early teenage years who are open to exploring their imagination in front of the camera. Dean feels like this "magical and fleeting time in life" is often overlooked. Dream Sessions are Dean's way of celebrating this time in a young person's life.

In effort to celebrate people beyond their youth years, Dean offers Radiance Sessions. These are intended to make people feel beautiful at any age. She wants women to see themselves in the mirror the same way they see themselves in a professionally shot photo. She helps her clients feel beautiful by building relationships with them and allowing them to be comfortable with her and in front of the camera. She says this is when the magic happens.

"I always loved that a lens could capture a person in a way that you might not always notice with your own eye," Dean says. "I love capturing a mood or moment."

Dean is also part of various other projects that support causes outside of her own business. She works with The Power Fund to celebrate women who have experienced domestic abuse in their lives. She also started The Gardenia Project which she calls a storytelling project to connect women of strength. The Gardenia Project is newly launched and Dean hosts an Instagram account specifically for The Gardenia Project. Its own website is in the works.
