Farm by the River Bed & Breakfast with Stables: A Nature Lover's Escape

By Elisha Neubauer

In the White Mountains in North Conway, New Hampshire, is an absolute hidden gem. The property, gifted as a land grant from King George III of England, is a 70-acre plot of forest and pastureland with Saco River frontage- all engulfed in spectacular, wrap-around views of the mountains. Having been in their family for over 230 years, the Bed and Breakfast makes for a great vacation spot for nature lovers and the seekers of a peaceful escape from reality.

The lodge contains nine guest rooms under one roof, while the property boasts an additional four-bedroom vacation cottage rental. Each room has its own private bathroom, with TV, WiFi, and A/C. Some rooms have two person Jacuzzis and/or fireplaces, and deluxe two room family suites are available. Most interestingly, perhaps, is the unique stables and equestrian center located on-site. "We found out we were unique in terms of our barns," states Charlene Browne, Co-Owner of Farm by the River.

"We have a rare example of an English barn, and also a Yankee barn." According to Browne, they're the only game in town when it comes to on-site horse stables and activities, especially as they're open daily year round to the public. "We offer on-site horseback riding (even in the winter), carriage, wagon, sleigh, and pony rides," says Browne. "Inn guests enjoy a special rate for this."

Browne says that, while the equine center is a major draw, non-horseback riding guests still enjoy the property. "We have beautiful grounds, with a huge perennial gardens, a great habitat for birds- bird feeders galore," she states. "People enjoy looking at the gardens, birds, and horses in the pasture while having breakfast on the patio deck. Fall is a kaleidoscope of crimson color with 11 acres of mature maple sugar stands along the Saco River."

She adds, "And a carriage ride for two is a lovely way to see the property." The property has actually been designated a Wildlife Habitat by the Wildlife Federation. In fact, on the 70 acres, there are 5 different classified wildlife habitats.

To make your stay at the Farm by the River Bed and Breakfast with Stables even more enjoyable, they offer several unique, tailored packages. "We offer packages that includes horse activities," Browne announces.

"There is the Easy Adventure for couples or Family Fun packages that offer either a horseback, wagon, or sleigh ride within the package." She continues, saying, "We also offer unique custom made Elopement Packages that include a sleigh or carriage ride for two. Some people even opt to incorporate the ride into the ceremony." Christmas boasts the Journey to the North Pole Lodging Package which includes lodging and a magical train ride to the North Pole including meetings with the elves and Santa. "We also have a multitude of DH and XC ski packages as well as snowmobiling packages."
