Exploring the Wild with Guided Adventures and Outdoor Education

By Marina Jokic

Outdoor ESCAPES NH offers wilderness adventures, scenic tours, outdoor education trainings, as well as custom adventure packages among others. Based in Conway, Outdoor ESCAPES NH is owned and operated by Lucie Villeneuve and its mission is to educate people about nature and to immerse them in its beauty.

"Wilderness is not a luxury, but a necessity of the human spirit," reads a quote by Edward Abbey on the organization's homepage- an apt description of what nature's role is in our lives. Indeed, the natural world offers not just pleasing sights, but also a peaceful haven for the human mind and body.

It is that idea that propelled Outdoor ESCAPES NH into business and has guided its choice of outdoor activities. "Our guides and instructors help people of all ages get into nature in every season with safety, fun, and learning in mind," says Villeneuve.

With its variety of guided adventures, nature tours, and outdoor education activities, Outdoor ESCAPES NH has introduced so many people to the fulfillment of being outdoors. Among the portfolio of activities taught are hiking and backpacking, mountain biking, canoeing, kayaking, target archery, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and low-impact trekking.

People can select a custom tour package depending on the activities they are interested in most. "The serious outdoors person can also learn the skills and knowledge involved in backcountry living, bushcraft, and primitive survival," adds Villeneuve.

During their adventure, whether traversing a trail, floating along rapids, or trekking over the snow, participants can also learn about New Hampshire's history, ecology, wildlife, animal tracking and signs, flora and fauna while experiencing local culture and natural attractions. Enjoying a taste of fresh maple sugar while learning its history or cooling off in a local swimming hole, a visitor can partake in many uniquely local activities.

Villeneuve says that her organization strives to customize each experience according to participants' interests and abilities so as to make their trip truly memorable and unique. "Anything is trips, camping expeditions on foot or by canoe or snowshoe, inn-to-inn tours," she adds. One day, you could be visiting the Great North Woods and paddling a wild river along the Northern Forest Canoe Trail, and another, you can hike the Cohos Trail and see moose, loons, eagles, Canada jays and even the Milky Way at night.

A popular customized guided tour includes lodging along the seacoast or in the Lakes region followed by a sightseeing tour or several days of a hiking, biking or paddling expedition. The beauty of the guided tours is that you are free to fully customize it and tailor it to your level of experience.

There are several participant reviews included on the site as well as a comprehensive list and description of each outdoor activity. Villeneuve recommends to stay at a bed and breakfast in the winter, snowshoe in the morning, cross country ski in the afternoon, and track wildlife.
