Everyone Can Be a Rock Climber with EVO Rock and Fitness

By Marina Jokic

In the heart of New England's climbing hub, EVO offers everything you expect to find at a premier climbing gym and more. With three locations in New Hampshire, Colorado, and Maine, EVO approaches fitness as a way of life rather than mere numbers on a scale. The first EVO location in Concord became New Hampshire's largest climbing facility, offering beginning, intermediate, and advanced instruction.

The studio's wide range of activities includes after-school youth programs, camps, a competitive youth climbing team, adaptive climbing, outdoor guiding, and more. They also offer a portable climbing wall that can be rented for off-site events.

"Our focus is on empowering everyone who comes through our doors to reach [his or her] goals, whether that means reaching the top of a particular climb or losing a certain amount of weight," Abree Murch, instructor and marketing manager at EVO Concord, said. "The act of climbing is a full-body workout in and of itself, but you're usually so absorbed in having fun, meeting new people, and trying hard that you aren't thinking about it."

Members of EVO are part of a close-knit community who share a love for climbing above all. Many members who join the gym to lose weight actually end up staying because of the lasting relationships they develop with many of their peers.

As part of their core offerings, EVO teaches beginners and advanced climbing courses complemented by outdoor climbing excursions, an 8-week adult team training program, and privately guided day trips.

Their introduction to climbing class teaches basic skills you need to climb on a rope such as grading systems, technique, how to fit a harness, and how to tie in and to belay among others. The class equips students with the necessary skills to pass a belay test after which they are allowed to climb on their own.

EVO's yoga classes are an excellent supplement to climbing as it improves flexibility, balance, endurance, and core strength in addition to developing optimal breathing.

"EVO was founded on the basis of community and we aim to provide the framework for people of all ages and abilities to discover their potential through climbing in an encouraging, non-intimidating environment," Murch said.
