Educate Yourself: Care Net Pregnancy Center

By Elisha Neubauer

Facing an unexpected pregnancy can be a daunting experience - especially if you are unsure of your options. In the Lakes Region area, the Care Net Pregnancy Center is an organization that will hold your hand through the process, allowing you to make educated decisions in your own time without pressure or judgment. Open since 1984, the Care Net offers women a variety of pregnancy-related services and strives to be a trusted resource for woman confronted with unexpected pregnancies.

"Women have choices regarding an unplanned pregnancy," says Executive Director Linda S. Trask. "Some women know exactly what they will do; others are not so sure. For these women, Care Net Pregnancy Center of the Lakes Region seeks to provide a calm and caring environment where a woman can explore her options without pressure." The Center provides pregnancy testing and confirmation free of charge. Client advocates are assigned, and registered nurses are available for all clients to discuss any medical concerns.

For women who choose to continue with their pregnancy, the Center holds parenting classes in which they can earn certificates good for use at the Center's materials boutique. Clothes, diapers, and other baby-related items are donated to the boutique by local churches. For women who are considering adoption, the Center can provide them with support and referrals.

"CNPC-LR is not an adoption agency nor are we affiliated with one," says Trask. "However, some of the staff have been trained through the National Council for Adoption and are well qualified to discuss this option and provide referrals to local adoption agencies." The Center has not forgotten about fathers - a program called Dr. Dad has been developed to help prepare dads-to-be, teaching and supporting them to properly care for their little ones.

While the center does not provide any abortion services or referrals, they do strive to supply proper education to those facing this choice - and support those who have already undergone the procedure.

"We offer compassionate support and education through our abortion recovery program," Trask says, as women can begin to experience difficulties associated with the process months or even years afterwards. These symptoms can include guilt, grief, anger, anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, and more. The Center provides confidential support designed with compassion and empathy for those exhibiting any accompanying symptoms.

Unexpected pregnancies can be daunting, but you do not have to go through it alone. The Care Net Pregnancy Center has been helping women in the Lakes Region for thirty years, allowing them to make their own decisions by providing them with the education, support, and services they may require.
