Concord's Two-Property, New England Accredited Retirement Community

By Kelly Church

The decision to move into a retirement community is a big one, and Havenwood Heritage Heights understands that. The Concord, NH facility is home to residents aged 62 and older, and is a nonprofit, faith-based community. The residential community offers a variety of programs, including a bucket list program to help residents cross off bucket list items, and is accredited by the nation's only continuing care commission.

At Havenwood Heritage Heights, residents can choose from all levels of care. The community is actually split up between two campuses that are only one mile apart; Havenwood being one, and Heritage Heights the other. Havenwood is the original campus and is 13 acres of one and two-bedroom cottages, gardens and walkways lined in trees. It features a boutique, library, game room, ice cream parlor and movie theater along Main Street, the community's main drag.

Heritage Heights, on the other hand, is the newer, larger development. Its 35 acres overlooking the Merrimack River Valley and has studio apartments, one, two and three-bedroom cottages. Heritage Heights is only growing. The community was recently expanded with 34 new cottages on the north side of the property.

"People who move to Havenwood Heritage Heights are active and independent individuals who choose to move to our community," Administrator Jane Poitras says. "When they first walk through the front door, it can be a very big step. However, once they meet the staff, visit with residents and see the community in action, they begin to plan the right time to move."

Life at Havenwood Heritage Heights comes with many amenities: a pool, cooking classes, social events, meditation rooms, clubs, yoga, Tai Chi and even a Dakim BrainFitness Lab to test brain sharpness. Poitras says the Program's Department Staff does a great job of offering relevant activities the residents want to partake in. They put a little extra emphasis on the Bucket List program. Poitras says this is an extra special part of living at Havenwood Heritage Heights. This can include helicopter rides, zip lining, horseback riding or motorcycle rides.

For residents, assisted living is available at any time. Residents who choose assisted living make their home at The Lodge on the Havenwood campus, right in the heart of Main Street. Residents get all meals prepared for them, every day. Laundry, cleaning and transportation are also taken care of through the assisted living service. Emergency responders are on call should that be necessary, and 24-hour security is provided. Assisted living staff can also manage medications. This option, and even the independent living options, is designed to give peace of mind to residents and their families.

"For any family member who may be skeptical of this move, I would suggest visiting the community right away," Poitras says. "Beyond our comfortable cottage accommodations, we are proud to share that we have had two years Deficiency Free Surveys in our levels of care."

Deficiency Free Surveys are administered by the Department of Public Health and it determines the quality of services provided. Deficiency free means that Havenwood Heritage Heights meets or exceeds all standards set by state and federal governments. Havenwood Heritage Heights also was accredited by the Continuing Care Accreditation Commission (CCAC).

The CCAC is the only accrediting group for continuing care retirement communities and Poitras says this seal of approval is widely regarded as a sign of quality in the industry. To achieve this, a community must at the minimum meet four areas: resident life, health and wellness, financial resources and disclosure, and governance and administration.

For residents interested in Havenwood Heritage Heights, tours can be scheduled by contacting the office. Potential residents are also encouraged to join the community for an event or lunch to get a feel for the community.
