Channing Johnson Photography Embraces and Captures the Fleeting Moments

By Kelly Church

With photos in TIME Magazine and U.S. News & World Report and a photojournalism degree from the University of Missouri, Channing Johnson considers himself more than prepared for whatever photography challenges come his way.

The North Carolina native owns his own photography company in Boston, MA -- Channing Johnson Photography. He shoots a lot of weddings and engagement photos, many of which have a slightly vintage feel as Johnson works to snap photos without invading someone's space. This, he believes, is what gives his photography such authenticity.

"In addition to focusing a lot on emotions and interactions, I love [to] make the mundane beautiful," Johnson says. "It's always fun and I think important to show how ordinary things can be remarkable when you look at them the right way."

He considers himself someone that has a "heightened sense of nostalgia," reveling in the fleeting moments that really interest him. His wedding and engagement photography captures these moments: champagne bubbling over a glass down a woman's hand, the moment after a groom gets cake smeared on his face, a recently engaged couple sharing breakfast, a laugh or a hug.

"I work very unobtrusively," Johnson says. "I don't interfere or try to make things perfect. You start to lose authenticity and the humanity in the small and big moments in life when the photographer starts to interfere with the content."

Johnson is more than just a photographer for hire. His website features a blog where he documents not just projects that he is hired to photograph, but also major life events, including the recent passing of his brother-in-law and his son growing up. With a true photojournalist feel, his photos tell a story. For Johnson, this continues his narrative of enjoying and remembering the moments as they come.

His photos, both personal and as a hired photographer, are in natural settings. There are no staged shoots in photo studios. They're taken in homes, parks, city streets and other natural environments around the Boston area.

Johnson can be reached via email, phone or at to be hired for event photography.
