Castleberry Fairs: A Supportive Hand for Artists

By Elisha Neubauer

Artists and craftsmen across New Hampshire and Massachusetts have a supportive helping hand in the form of Castleberry Fairs. Producing and promoting juried arts and crafts fairs; Castleberry Fairs handles the events from top to bottom, ensuring a flawlessly executed show. In managing every detail, Castleberry Fairs offers artists and craftsmen a chance to exhibit and sell their work to a wider range of audiences while simultaneously supplying the local community with the culture and vibrancy associated with the arts world.

"We work for the artisans and craftsmen who pay us and trust us to do our job, which in short is to PROMOTE and bring them a craft appreciative shopper," says Terry Mullen, Owner. At Castleberry Fairs, they believe in supporting the artists in every way possible, focusing on the business side so that the artists can focus on what they do best- their art. "We find locations that meet our demographics and plan every show detail," explains Mullen. "From layout to health permits, hiring police traffic details to obtaining fire permits, dig safe, dumpsters, portable toilets, musicians, tent rentals, etcetera. We provide exhibitor credentials, too (buttons, parking passes, booth signs etc). No detail is overlooked."

Castleberry doesn't stop there. "We have a booth and presence at the show to help attendees as well," Mullen states. "We are onsite at every show making sure all goes smoothly and we are there for the exhibitors if they need our help." While they facilitate the show from on-site, their work begins long before opening day. "Every media promotion is covered- from email blasts to road signs, store signs, radio, print, rack cards, brochures, direct mail and online ads," says Mullen. "There is no mystery...Everyone within 20 miles of a show knows there is a Castleberry Fair."

Even though Castleberry Fairs' main focus is on the artisans and crafters, they are aware of the powerful impact these events have on the local communities. "People love coming to the fairs, meeting the artisan and buying from the person who made it," he details. "Folks are much more mindful of the origins of all the items they consume, whether it be free trade coffee or crafts made in the USA." Mullen goes on to say, "Also, I think most people (especially vacationers) still want to shop. They want a tangible memory of their trip."

To ensure a memorable experience for visitors of the fair, Castleberry juries every application. "All Castleberry Fairs are juried," Mullen tells us. "Prospective exhibitors must submit a completed application with photos or samples of their work, as well as a bio and photo of their display. Entertainers send in a request for consideration through our website as well."

This selection process makes sure that Castleberry Fairs offers the best of the best as well as helping to provide a well rounded assortment of vendors, guaranteeing there is not one or two categories that are heavier. "We limit the number of artisans per category. Jewelry, Photography and Specialty Food Categories fill quickly."

The application is listed on their website for easy reference and can be submitted in the same format. To heighten your chances of acceptance to a Castleberry Fair, they do highly suggest offering a demonstration.

"We want to educate & enlighten the public on the value of American made works and instill an appreciation for the handcrafted tradition," recites Mullen in an open letter to applicants posted on their website. Due to a large number of responses each year, the Mullens do strongly urge you to apply as soon as the applications are open for submissions. "We publish our new application each January and within a few weeks all shows are 50% full and several are 100% full."
