Angela Martinez is the owner and one of the instructors at Bikram Yoga Manchester, a studio designed to welcome yoga students of all levels in a relaxing, vibrant and focused space. The Manchester, NH studio has been serving the community since early 2005, and operating out of the current location since 2013 after demand required a larger space. Bikram yoga, a type of practice held in a room heated to 105 degrees, is thought to have a powerful effect on the body.
"Bikram yoga works by systematically exercising the body with its series of 26 postures and two breathing exercises done in a heated room," Martinez says. "The series is specifically designed to safely warm and stretch the muscles, ligaments and tendons in order which maximizes their use and strength."
Martinez is a true believer of bikram yoga. She believes that authentic bikram yoga can change lives, teaching discipline, strength and flexibility through consistent practice. Martinez says that poses featured in bikram yoga promote deep breathing, which leads to fresh air being circulated through the body.
Bikram yoga is beginner friendly, too. According to Bikram Yoga Manchester, the heat is noticeable, however acts as a catalyst to all the benefits of practice, therefore it should be embraced instead of feared. Classes are 90 minutes long, and unlike most yoga studios, there is only one type of class offered here. All levels practice the same class.
"My advice [to new students is to] keep an open mind," Martinez says. "[The] first few classes, the goal is to stay [in] the room and do the best that they can. Also, be consistent with their practice."
Bikram Yoga Manchester has several options for pricing to accommodate each yoga practitioner's frequency. New students are asked to arrive 15 minutes before class. Since all classes are drop-ins, all students are encouraged to show up early to get a space.
