All in the Family at Fratello's Italian Grille

By Elisha Neubauer

Fratello's Italian Grille is a unique concept created by the McDonough brothers, owners of the popular Homestead restaurants. After acquiring the Indian Head bank building in the Laconia area in 1992, they realized the spectacular brick facility did not tie in with the theme of their previous restaurants. This led to the creation of Fratello's, a casual Italian-American eatery featuring the best of both Italy and America.

Fratello's, a derivative of an Italian word meaning 'brothers,' features a wood-fire brick oven, live entertainment, and a well-planned menu offering steaks, seafood, and Italian selections. "Fratello's is an American Italian concept," explains Chris McDonough, owner of Fratello's. "Our focus has never been on portraying our restaurant as 'authentic' but rather focused on delivering simply great food."

Dishes are crafted from fresh ingredients and the sauces, soups, and dough are all made from scratch on-site daily. "Something that really sets Fratello's apart is that we have resisted the trend of eliminating high cost items such as lobster, scallops, shrimp, choice angus NY Sirloin and filet mignon from our menu," McDonough says. "When many restaurants have moved to lower cost and quality seafood and beef, we have held firm to the belief that these are the items our guests want and we will continue to offer them at the fairest price we can."

Although Fratello's has multiple locations, McDonough says his restaurant doesn't consider itself a chain. "Each location continues to have a certain level of direct owner involvement that a chain would never have." To prove the point, Fratello's offers live music to their guests, including live piano in the dining room from 6-9 pm Monday through Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings. On Friday evenings, the live entertainment takes to the lounge portion of the restaurant, hosting music performances of every genre.

Whether you're on a first date, enjoying a meal with friends, or dining out with your family, it's nice to just have a comfortable place to enjoy good music and good food. Come by and try out their signature dish, the Seafood Sophia with mouthwatering lobster, scallops, shrimp, and mussels in a lobster sherry cream sauce (pictured above). Buon appetito!
